Norman Manley International Airport Runway End Safety Area (RESA) Investigation

LEAPP was commissioned to analyse aircraft performance at Kingston's Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) following a proposed to reduce declared distances on the runway at NMIA following an aircraft over-run accident in December 2009. The project involved assessing the RESA requirements for the runway in order to bring it into compliance with ICAO standards and recommendations, determining the merits of application of an Engineered Materials Arrestor System (EMAS), and designing several options for implementation of RESAs for the runway. As part of this project several options were also explored to extend the runway towards the north in to the Kingston Harbour so as to both provide for RESA distances and provide an extension of the runway take-off and landing distances. For options to extend the runway, LEAPP investigated the additional air transport market reach that the airport could acquire based on various increased amounts of runway extension.
